Victorian Market

The indoor Victorian Market at the very centre of the Old Town, is another key IOTA project which invited artists to design a series of new entrance features which celebrate the character of this much loved Invernessian ‘institution’ while complementing the themes developed in the remodelling of the overall area.

This project is being developed with the close involvement of the market traders.

The commissioned artistic team, B&W Cart - Nicola Atkinson, Hanna Tuulikki and Karen Vaughan - view the Market as a place of riches. They co-ordinated a number of events in the Market including a Tea Party and Sound event to engage with the traders and public. These interactions helped shape ideas for their striking entrance designs which are based on the delicacy of Victorian lace.

Work has been simmering away behind the scenes and the final phase is coming to an end.  Detailed designs have been given the go-ahead by the engineers and manufacture is underway, with installation scheduled to take place very soon!  A wee taster of things to come began with designs being incorporated into
the new doors on Union Street.  These fascinating images were the product of the creative mind of Inverness-based artist Gordon Robin Brown, with a wee bit of additional design magic provided by MOOSE77.  Look out for unusual details in the designs – a butterfly, pennyfarthing, penguins and microsope!

The current phase of the project, the lace themed entrance portals, is being managed by Annie Marrs.  Along with the expertise of HRI Architects this involves the realization of the new entrances from manufacture to installation.
