Limited Edition Multiple: Catherine Bertola

“As an artist, what underpins my work is a desire to look beyond the surface of objects and buildings, to uncover forgotten and invisible histories of places and people, as a way of reframing and considering the past. One of the things that struck me at Culloden Battlefield was its invisibility. Nothing on the surface really reveals the full extent of the horror that unfolded on that April day in 1746. I wanted to make something that made visible the loss on that day, the men who lost their lives and the demise of Highland culture that followed.”

Revirescit (it grows green again) by Catherine Bertola was commissioned in response to Culloden Battlefield and consists of an edition of 100 of the lead cockades, each packaged in individual velvet lined black boxes (140 x 120 x 65cm), with the title of the work foil embossed on the lid. The cockades are made from lead sheet that has been cut into strips and embossed with the texture of cloth, to create a lead ribbon.
