Artists talk & sound workshops in Ullapool

Neville Gabie's artist film following the story of Achiltibuie’s new community skiff will be discussed at the World Skiff Championships in Ullapool from 8th - 14th July.
The free talk event and sound workshops are part of a collaboration between IOTA and Coigach Community Development Company - where the Neville Gabie has been researching and filming the coastal rowing team since February 2012.

Come along to hear more from the creative team behind a new artist film commission following the story of one Highland community and the construction launch and first season of their latest St Ayles Skiff, the Lily-Rose.
Neville Gabie has an established reputation as an artist who works closely with communities and situations which are outside the mainstream. Projects includes working amongst a farming community in the Australian outback, at an Antarctic research station, in a city centre building site and most recently as artist in residence for eighteen months on the Olympic Park, London during construction.
Emma Dove is a recent Highland film & media graduate from the University of Stirling and her graduation film, ’On Another Note’, has been shown at short film festivals internationally.
Based in Ullapool, professional sound recordist Becky Thomson shares her experiences from her career spanning TV drama, feature films and documentaries.
Post Talk Gigs: live music from ‘Hunter & The Bear’ featuring guitarist/singer Will Irvine one of the Coigach Rowers at The Arch, 10-11 West Shore St, from 10pm or ‘The Highland Ceilidh Band’, 9pm at The Ceilidh Place.

FREE Workshops: Sound Techniques for Film-makers with Becky Thomson
Workshop 1: Adults (over 18), 10am-1pm
Workshop 2: Young people (age 13-18), 2-5pm
A great soundtrack can make your film truly distinctive! Learn secrets of professional sound recording on location for documentary or drama. How to avoid wind rumble on the mic; how to choose a microphone; techniques that can make recorded voices sound as good as the movies; understand how to use mics around the camera shot; avoid pitfalls that will make the sound editing difficult.
Suitable for complete novices or experienced film-makers, encompassing low-to-no budget projects, this workshop covers the basics you need to improve your sound. Time available for one to one consultations on individual projects (Pre-booked only). Bring whatever video camera or sound kit you have, the session includes lots of practical work. Neville Gabie will be on hand to support both workshops.
