IOTA is dedicated to engaging the public and bringing contemporary art to the Highlands of Scotland

IOTA is an artist-led organisation that has been set up to bring contemporary art to the Highlands. The IOTA team are available for bookings, commissions and collaborations.

IOTA have a wide range of experience in major museum exhibitions, public programs and artist residencies. IOTA have also facilitated a number of projects involving artists who live and work in the Highlands.

IOTA was set up by Steve Wilson, an artist with a long history of making work in Scotland and internationally. He has worked with groups such as Scottish Arts Council, Glasgow International Festival – Dance, Manchester International Festival – Artist’s Projects, Department for Culture Media & Sport – Artists-in-Residence Scheme and Creative Scotland – Artist’s Bursaries Programme.

IOTA is committed to bringing contemporary art to the Highlands of Scotland, and strives to engage with the public through various exhibitions and benefits.

IOTA is a not-for-profit cultural organisation which aims to create awareness about contemporary art, design and architecture. It has established itself as an educational hub to the public with its studio programmes, tours and exhibitions.

The Highlands of Scotland have been identified as an international destination for contemporary art because of its natural beauty and isolation from other high-density areas. IOTA’s mission is to engage the public in exploring the rich culture and heritage of this area.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, IOTA, is based in Inverness. It is a recognized, international site for contemporary art in the Highlands. The museum has four exhibition spaces and a permanent collection of over 250 pieces.

The IOTA engages with the communities that it serves to bring contemporary art to all those who live in the North and North-East Highlands. In doing so, it has helped regenerate this part of Scotland which had long been suffering from an economic downturn. The museum’s team is dedicated to increasing understanding and appreciation of contemporary art among those living in this region.

In addition to its exhibitions, the IOTA hosts a range of events including talks, workshops and activities for children aimed at engaging people with this type of art from early years onwards.

IOTA has a role of engaging with the public and bringing contemporary art to the Highlands of Scotland. They want to challenge perceptions of who can/should make and appreciate art, what art is and why people should engage with it. Their primary goal is to bring contemporary art to people’s homes, their workplaces or out in the community.

They tell us that they have developed many ways, which have helped them see a lot of success. This includes:

– Linking public galleries to their surroundings through high quality commissions

– Helping small galleries show their work nationally and internationally

– Providing funding for high quality public commissions across Scotland

– Building a network across Scotland of artists, curators, communities and funders.

The IOTA Gallery is an art gallery dedicated to engaging the public and bringing contemporary art to the Highlands of Scotland. It is situated in the picturesque village of Lairg, which sits on a headland overlooking the Dornoch Firth and Suilven in Sutherland.

The Gallery is open all year round but there are some seasonal variations (see hours).
