Getting Up: Windows On the City
These unlikely spots for art galleries have sprung up as part of a plan conceived by Inverness Old Town Art and BID (Inverness Business Improvement District) to bring art onto the streets over the winter season. Funded by the Inverness Common Good Fund a group of artists have worked across a variety of media from Inflatable Monster's film projections, Le May and Grant's glow-in-the-dark woolly mushrooms and Mike Inglis' new take on the Garden of Eden.
The artworks involve and reflect the local community; some using archive film footage and others directly engaging with pedestrians. By injecting life into the empty shop windows, the aim is to refresh and enrich the way we experience the city.
The window displays were unveiled to the public at the launch event on the 19th of December 2009. The event featured live music from Withered Hand, Mississippi Hoodoo Man with local support from 28 Jacks, video projections, hot soup and a guided walk by the artists of all the installation venues around town. The night ended a fun Contemporary Art Tombola by art collective Now Now in which those hardy enough to endure the winter chill were rewarded with a cuppa and a jammy dodger and some unique prizes...
The installations will remain in their locations until late January. For more information, visit the Getting Up official website.
