Freaky Fridays

During the winter months of Novemeber and Decemeber 2011 the Old Town Rose Street car park presented Freaky Fridays - a series of weekly unexpected happenings that took the public on a journey from hell through purgatory to heaven as part of the Sublime programme.

Starting with an innovative new solo version of the classic Faust/us by DBS Productions that fused animation, mixed media, and physical theatre. Followed by live interactions with magician Dean Melville, a bewitching film screening by artist Torsten Lauschmann, live street art from Team Recoat during which they transformed cars volunteered by the public on the ground floor. Amoung the motorists was Trev Johnson who had his small white van transformed with a honeycomb design: ‘I thought it would be a bit fun and a good way to support the young artists, who turned out to be a fantastic team. It looks very good, I am very pleased with it.’

Bringing us closer to heaven as nature slowly reclaims our industrial relics was Rosie Newman's sculptural installation Wild Thing – a moss cover VW Beetle and a screening of Industrial Revolutions – a new film by Cut Media which captures a sublime and compelling performance from the Highland’s street trials riding star Danny MacAskill. The journey concluded with a welcome lift to our spirits as the public were transported upwards to heaven with yarnbombing duo Sundogs (Annie Marrs and Jennifer Cantwell). Their installation, Cloudishness, transported people inside a knitted blue-sky cloudscape to and from heaven via the lifts, with a soundscape of utopian public information messages broadcast from the departure lounge.

What’s next? There are more plans a foot for 2012 which include a new sound commission and a return visit from Team Recoat.
