The Conch [Sound Studio]

The Conch [Sound Studio] is the latest work by artists Zoë Walker & Neil Bromwich. Commissioned by IOTA to make work in response to the Expo site, the conch is a mobile structure, part shell / part ark constructed from local larch and housed on a car trailer.  The artists have used the conch to conduct interviews with people living in a diverse range of communities around Inverness including Cromarty, Merkinch and Findhorn.  The resulting soundtrack - experienced inside the Conch - draws on the interactions the artists had with the Highland public over the last few months. This part of the project has continued to develop and grow as the artists have met and interviewed a wide range of visitors at Scotland’s Housing Expo site.

The project continued beyond the Expo site,  touring further a field to remote communities which included a stop off at the Culbokie Community Hall and Gardens during Open Doors Day on Saturday 11 September.  This special tour offered the opportunity for the public to meet the artists and share their own opinions about the challenges facing communities and the planet.

Walker and Bromwich are an established collaborative duo and have been working together for the last ten years. Their international projects employ a humorous but thoughtful approach to some of life’s challenging questions about belief and the pursuit of happiness. Their work has been presented around the world including at Tate Britain, The V&A Museum, The Fruitmarket Gallery Edinburgh.

The Conch [Sound Studio] was supported by Highland Council, Creative Scotland and Inverness City Partnership and The Rural Innovation Fund.
